Meadow, seeds and scythes

Monday 6 July 2026 at 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM Open to all

It’s the time of year when all the wildflowers in the meadow have set seed, and the grass is still standing up – so it’s ideal for cutting with our scythes.  Other, less strenuous jobs, are collecting valuable yellow rattle seed, turning hay and raking it up when dry.

We are hoping for enough fine weather in the first half of July to do this.  We need help, and even if you just want to watch, that’s fine – come along. Let us know if and when you can help.

Exact timing will depend on the weather and be on the website or the volunteers’ Whatsapp, but provisionally:

– Monday and Tuesday 6 & 7 July – yellow rattle, from 2-7 pm roughly; also scythe peening and sharpening demos.

 – Wednesday and Thursday look fine for mowing, with instruction given if you fancy a go (and don’t have any back problems);

  – from then on, it will need dry afternoons, probably.

 – the weekend may be good, so I expect people will be out.
